Harry Potter and the Idolatry of Yore
The Fourth Year
Written by Megora P. McGonagall
Introduction
I began writing "IofY", as it has come to be known, back in January of 2000.
This was back in the "dark ages" of Harry Potter fandom, when little was
really known about the direction of the series. We only had books one through
three, and rumors abounded about book four, the one collectively known as
the one that would put a spin on Harry Potter as we knew it. Things would
change, Harry would change, and the direction of the books would be a little
clearer.
Everyone was anxious as heck for HP Day, July 6, 2000, the day the fourth
Harry Potter book would be released. J.K. Rowling had dropped hints very
few and far between, so naturally, the Internet made up for the lack of
information by getting the rumor-mill rolling. Several ridiculous rumors
were mixed in with quite a few that were believable. Half tired of waiting
for more Harry Potter to read, and half bored and disgusted with the rumors,
I decided to help myself through the worst case of Potter-Fever I've ever
had by writing my own fan fiction. It was my first big attempt at a novel,
so naturally, the first 15 or so chapters aren't that great in my opinion.
But, I digress. The book was created for my own enjoyment, but eventually
I was persuaded to post it on the web. It became an ongoing part of the Daily
Prophet, and some say the most popular. Harry Potter and the Idolatry of
Yore became a rumor-mill melting pot. I collected as many rumors as I possibly
could about what the fourth book would be, and tried to meld them together
in a semi-believable Potterish plot. The plot was completely worked out based
on the knowledge I had from the first three books, and was not changed after
the release of the fourth book. Therefore, please discard what you know from
the fourth book, as it will inevitably confuse you while reading IofY.
A few other notes; when I was developing this plot, nothing - and I mean
absolutely nothing - was known about the histories of certain characters,
namely, McGonagall, Snape, and Lupin. Since those three are my favorite
characters, I decided I wanted to know more about them. Resources were limited,
therefore I made up my own histories for them. After book four came out,
it was said by J.K. Rowling that McGonagall's 75 years old. How was I to
know that when the only descriptions in the book say absolutely nothing about
her being that elderly? If you go look in book one it says clearly straight
black hair in a bun, glasses, and that's it. Nothing about wrinkles. I went
with what I knew, and I always imagined her as a younger person, somewhere
in her thirties. Please picture her that way, because yet again, you could
get confused.
All that said, I haven't heard from too many people who are confused by the
story, so don't get all daunted and shirk away from reading it. It's been
a lot of fun to write, even though it's taken me two years, and I've heard
from lots of people that it's not half-bad. Have fun, enjoy the book, just
remember where it came from.
And no, I'm not J.K. Rowling. :)
Sincerely,
Meg McGonagall |
